Illinois sink hole swallows soccer field

I am not sure how many of you saw the news, but part of a sink hole swallowed part of a soccer field in Alton, Illinois. The sink hole was 100 feet wide and 30 feet deep. The soccer field is on top of an old mine.

Wow, it's a good thing nobody was on the field playing when that happened. But I wonder why you would build a soccer field on top of a mine.
